Twice a year all things awesome in the entertainment world congregate at the ExCel London for MCM Expo. But what is MCM Expo I hear you ask? The three day event is a showcase of entertainment and modern popular culture from various segments of the entertainment industry including but not restricted to Science Fiction, Animation, Comic Books, Anime & Manga, Collectables & Merchandising. It is essentially a European version of the infamous San Diego International Comic Con where geeks and geeketts alike can enjoy a weekend of fun. An estimated 75,000 people will travel to Europe’s largest pop culture and memorabilia festival.
During recent years the presence of gaming at Comic Con has grown year on year. Co-Organiser Bryan Cooney has expressed an interest in expanding the event by a further 4,000m2 for a total of 21,000m2 of exhibitor space. Expo is the place see and play current and upcoming games from some of the worlds top publishers. Titles are often previewed at the event months before their eventual release to the public. Splinter Cell: Blacklist from Ubisoft and The Last of Us from Sony will be demoed live on the games stage. Also, on display to play throughout the weekend will be Lost Planet 3 from Capcom as well as Metro: Last Light.
The MCM eSports zone is going to be making its debut at this May’s show with the popularMassive Online Battle Arena (MOBA) title League of Legends. Preliminary stages of the Real Time Strategy (RTS) 5v5 tournament will take place online between 32 teams. The top 4 will go through to play out the semi-finals in front of an excited crowd. This will be the first time an eSports competition has taken place at MCM Expo London and is not to be missed. Both the qualifiers and staged finals at the MCM London Comic Con will be live streamed via the MCM eSports Twitch feed.
Backdrop Gaming (a.k.a DDR:UK) will be hosting a retro gaming area as well as DDR machines for open play.
Players of the latest Lara Croft will be delighted at the appearance of Camilla Luddington, who plays the iconic action heroine. Camilla will be meeting fans on the Saturday and Sunday of May’s MCM London Comic Con. Mark Meer who stars as the voice Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect series will be signing autographs and meeting fans over the MMC Comic Con weekend. So don’t forget to bring down your copies of the games and make them extra special.

You may still have to get in line each day as a large number of people arrive before 9am to wait for the doors to open. Please be warned that the queues can get very long, arrive early to make the most of your day. Remember to pick up cash before you arrive. I’ve already made the mistake of not doing this and have paid dearly. Queues for the two or three cash machines within the ExCel centre can get ridiculously long and will at times span the length of the entrance hall. Since very few of the stalls take card payment, cash is an essential commodity during the weekend. Be ready to make friends and to have a great time.
The full weekend early entry ticket also includes entry for the Friday preview. Some of the stalls wont be ready but it is a great way to plan your weekend ahead of the main event. So what are you waiting for? Get your tickets now.
